The Daily Diver

The Seiko SKX007 is my first foray into the watch world, and most likely the last- I’m a buy-it-for-life type, and the SKX007 fulfills that need. It is a versatile watch, that with various straps on its 22mm lugs fits any look. It has a timeless appearance that puts it ahead of any fashion-focused watch, and a solid background that comes with Seiko’s 7S26 movement. In short, it is the perfect watch for someone who appreciates quality and durability, but still has a budget. At between 150-300 dollars, this watch is clearly the champion among its dive watch competition.

With this watch, Seiko has made a steadfast companion for anyone. The weight of it on the wrist feels right- substantial, while not feeling cumbersome. The lume is pleasant given enough input light, but doesn’t come into play very often- it is a nice feature, but definitely geared towards spec-chasers in my opinion. Of course, I am not a diver nor am I an outdoors enthusiast, and in either case a lume might be more of a requirement. Its an inconsequential feature that embodies the piece as a whole- quietly functional, and there when you need it.

However, this watch is not perfect. The screwdown crown takes quite a bit of force to hold in the screwing position, and the different colors for Saturday/Sunday(blue and red, respectively)  in the date window make little sense aesthetically. Furthermore, I would’ve been interested in having an open back- I know this can be accomplished with a modification, but I think that a company that takes pride in its movement like Seiko does should show it off. It would be a subtle statement, but one worth making. At first I was not in love with the shiny texture of the case- it sits at an awkward medium between mirror polished and a textured matte. However, I’ve become accustomed to it, and this aesthetic quality adds character.

All things taken together, I can recommend this watch to anyone who desires a timepiece, for any lifestyle. This watch will go with you and steadfastly do its duty, as subtle a duty as that may be. The Seiko SKX007 is the perfect companion for someone who wants a robust diver that is reliable but wants to do so at a budget.
